When Do You Want To Go?
Explore the colourfully rich history of America's Wild West, on this motorhome adventure following in the footsteps, or horse-tracks, of Calamity Jane and Butch Cassidy. See spectacular landscapes, from Mount Rushmore and the Badlands National Park to the awe inspiring Devils Tower, volcanic Yellowstone National Park and of course the incredible Colorado Rocky Mountains. Uncover Deadwood's Gold Rush history and spend an evening in Laramie, once a rip-roaring desperado hang-out.
Day 1: Denver
Arrive in Denver and transfer to your hotel in the city, before heading out to explore the ‘mile high’ city that blends modern and ‘old west’ culture, along with a striking backdrop of the Rocky Mountains.
Day 2: Cheyenne (110 miles)
Collect your motorhome and set off on this Wild West Adventure. Head north towards Cheyenne, Wyoming, home of the Cheyenne Frontier Days, the worlds largest outdoor Rodeo, held in July.
Day 3: Wind Cave National Park (270 miles)
Today’s long drive through the tumbleweed strewn, barren landscape of western Nebraska is almost instantly rewarded upon arrival into South Dakota. Head for the prairies and pine forests of Wind Cave National Park, known for its vast underground caves and the bison, elk and pronghorn antelopes that roam the forests.
Day 4: Mount Rushmore (40 miles)
Iconic Mount Rushmore is a highlight for many, however the lesser-known Crazy Horse Memorial is also well worth a visit. Other points of interest include Badlands National Park and the site of the massacre at Wounded Knee.
Day 5: Devils Tower (120 miles)
Set off northbound, stopping at Deadwood before leaving South Dakota. Known for its gold rush history and the final resting place of Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane, this wild west town was built around adventure and offers fun and history in equal measure. Continue west into Wyoming towards Devils Tower National Monument, rising 1267 feet above the Belle Fourche River.
Day 6 & 7: Cody (315 miles)
This long drive is mostly on the interstate, so although covering many miles, its an easy drive and you should arrive at Ponderosa campground in Cody just after lunchtime. A short walk from the campground is the Buffalo Bill Centre of the West, a must-see for all Cowboy Country fans!
Day 8 & 9: Yellowstone National Park (100 miles)
Enjoy the spectacular drive through Shoshone Canyon to the entrance of Yellowstone National Park, where your continued journey to the campground will be a great introduction to the wildlife abundant here, including moose, bear and deer. Don’t miss ‘Old Faithful’, the geyser that faithfully shoots thousands of gallons of boiling water 150 feet into the air at predictably regular intervals!
Day 10: Grand Teton National Park (40 miles)
Leaving Yellowstone, travel the short distance to the majestic Grand Teton Mountains, where the Colter Bay Village campground offers a fantastic location from which to explore this beautiful park.
Day 11: Lander (140 miles)
Pass through The Wind River Indian Reservation, where the Arapahoe and Shoshone Tribes reside, crossing the Great Divide Basin to arrive in the town of Lander.
Day 12: Laramie (235 miles)
Once a rip-roaring railroad town, this wild west wonderland was so attractive to desperadoes that they decided to build the territorial prison here. Take a peek into the cells once frequented by Butch Cassidy!
Day 13: Fort Collins (75 miles)
The final stop on this itinerary is Fort Collins, a town at the foothills of the Colorado Rocky Mountains, a great place to relax and contemplate this spectacular region of America, and perhaps practice a few cowboy skills you might have picked up along the way!
Day 14: Denver (60 miles)
Drop off your motorhome in Denver and transfer to the airport for your return flight to the UK.
