When Do You Want To Go?
Straddling the equator in South-East Asia’s Malay Archipelago, the world’s third largest island is becoming increasingly popular with travellers who are drawn to its utterly diverse landscapes and ancient rainforests, home to some of the rarest and most endangered species of wildlife in the world.
Arguably the star of Malaysian Borneo and the best place for jungle trekking is the Danum Valley, which epitomises the biodiversity of the island and perhaps will offer the best opportunity to spot wildlife. Orangutans can be found here, as can sun bears, wild cats, clouded leopards and rhinoceros, all in the protected conservation areas and with the help of expert rangers. The Kinabatangan River also offers great wildlife opportunities and a boat ride along its calm waters reveals an array of exotic birdlife and water dwelling mammals, a fine way to spend a morning, particularly if the elusive pygmy elephant decides to bathe nearby.
Throughout your travels in Borneo, it is likely that you will come across indigenous communities that have thrived upon the island’s wild and raw habitat for many millennia. Still upholding many cultural ancient traditions, it is possible to stay amongst the communities in authentic longhouses, joining the tribespeople in their daily activities. At the very northern tip of Borneo is the Kinabalu National Park where it will be impossible to miss Malaysia’s highest mountain – Mt Kinabalu. Reaching its summit is challenging but you don’t have to climb too high to enjoy stunning vistas of the sprawling rainforest and turquoise ocean. Within close proximity to the Kinabalu National Park you will also find some of the finest beaches on the island with pristine white sand shores and warm tranquil waters. Head off the mainland and you will be rewarded further with idyllic tropical islands and marine parks dedicated to the conservation of sea turtles. Gaya Island is a particular highlight for those interested in snorkelling and diving.
Accommodation in Borneo is surprisingly comfortable and there are options to cater for every budget. Deep within the jungle, as you may expect, choices are more limited although eco-jungle lodges are well kept and help support the local communities. The finer hotels can be found smattered across the northern shore and upon the islands, but wherever you choose to stay, the magic of Borneo will be there.
