Introduction
A journey through the foothills of the Himalayas where spectacular scenery and jaw-dropping beauty is combined with atmospheric sights and areas of spiritual significance. Follow in the footsteps of the Dalai Lama, ride the Shimla railway line through the majestic scenery of Himachal Pradesh and soak up the atmosphere at Amritsar’s Golden Temple.
Day-by-Day
Day 1 & 2: Delhi
Discover Old and New Delhi on a sightseeing tour that takes in Jama Masjid, India’s largest mosque. Hop on a cycle rickshaw through the colourful alleyways and narrow streets to catch a glimpse of the bustle of daily life in Delhi. Visit Qutub Minar and Humayun’s tomb, both impressive and historically significant.
Day 3 & 4: Amritsar
Visit the 'Golden Temple', where all religions are welcome to meditate, listen to scriptures or simply marvel at the impressive architecture, particularly atmospheric in the evening. Experience the world’s largest community kitchen, which feeds an average of 100,000 people every day from all walks of life, then head to Wagah Border to witness ‘Beating the Retreat’ flag march performed by the Indian and Pakistani soldiers.
Day 5 & 6: Dharamshala
On the drive to Dharamshala, notice the landscape change from the fertile riverbeds of Punjab to the hilly and rocky terrain of the Himalayan foothills. Arrive in the spectacular setting of Dharamshala, surrounded by snow-capped mountains and the Kangra valley. Take a Kora walk along the holy trail, passing Tibetan people chanting holy hymns on the way to the temple of the Dalai Lama. Explore the major Buddhist centre McLeod Ganj and headquarters of the Tibetan Government in exile.
Day 7: Pragpur
The ornamental village of Pragpur is just a two-hour drive from Dharamshala, designated the country’s first heritage village in 1997, the narrow cobblestone streets are lined with fort-like houses with mud-plastered walls and slate roofs.
Day 8 - 10: Shimla
Blessed with natural splendour, Shimla’s panoramic location amongst green pastures and snow-capped peaks set it apart from other hill stations. Take in the spectacular views on-board the toy train to Kandaghat, a famous journey built by the British Raj, that reveals the rugged mountains, waterfalls, valleys and pine forests of Himachal Pradesh. Back in Shimla, discover the handicraft shops, the Lakkar Bazaar and many restaurants on offer in this picturesque hill resort.
