Introduction
Enjoy a slow-paced journey through the naturally beautiful region of Kerala on the southwestern tip of India. Explore the picturesque natural harbour city of Kochi with its eclectic blend of cultures and the birding paradise of Lake Vembanad. Travel along the peaceful backwaters of Kerala on board a traditional houseboat, then relax on the famous beaches of Kovalam.
Day-by-Day
Day 1 & 2: Kochi
Arrive in Kochi, also known as ‘Queen of the Arabian Sea’ thanks to its picturesque natural harbour. The city is made up of islands, connected to the mainland by bridges and ferries, and is an interesting blend of cultures from Europe and the Far East following historic visits from seafaring traders. Enjoy a morning city tour of Kochi and a Kathakali dance show in the evening.
Day 3 & 4: Kumarakom
Travel by private car to Kumarakom, a village on Lake Vembanad in the backwaters of Kerala. Enjoy a visit to the bird sanctuary, an ornithologist’s paradise set in lush woodlands, where the psychedelic colours of the native kingfisher and the acrobatics of the paradise flycatchers are an impressive sight.
Day 5: Alleppey, Houseboat
After an hour’s drive to Alleppey, board your houseboat for a scenic cruise along the backwaters of Kerala -a network of canals, rivers and lakes extending the length of this beautiful region. Stay overnight on board a converted rice boat, or Kettuvallom, the perfect way to explore the beauty of the backwaters. Enjoy traditional meals prepared onboard by your personal cook while the boat is anchored in a beautiful and tranquil part of the lake.
Day 6 - 8: Kovalam Beach
After enjoying breakfast on your houseboat, head to the beach town of Kovalam, where three crescent-shaped beaches provide shallow, calm waters ideal for swimming. Once a humble fishing village, the town was transformed by the arrival of hippies in the early seventies and is now one of India’s most popular resort destinations.
Day 9:
After breakfast, transfer to Trivandrum airport for the return flight to the UK.
