Almost everyone will have a safari on their bucket list, but it can be a bit daunting when planning that trip-of-a-lifetime to view the Big 5, and more. Where to start? Well, we’ve condensed the many choices into five of our favourite African destinations for the perfect safari.
Kenya offers arguably some of the best wildlife viewings in the world, with the spectacular scenery of the Great Rift Valley providing the perfect backdrop. Safari action in Kenya is year-round, from a pride of lions lazily keeping watch, hippos submerged in swamps, grazing herbivores sprinkled over the great plains, but the biggie in Kenya is the great, world-famous wildebeest migration which passes through the Masai Mara from October to November and is an amazing spectacle to witness.
Botswana boasts such variety and contrast and has a uniqueness that other safari destinations don’t have, the Okavango Delta. Its waterways provide an utterly captivating eye-level perspective of the predators that stalk their abundance of prey here. You can take a silent ride in a dugout canoe to witness the activities of its many residents. There’s also the Chobe National Park for spotting mega-herds of elephants, buffalo, impala, lion, and zebra.
Famously home to the impressive Mt Kilimanjaro, Tanzania also boasts an icon of Africa, the Serengeti, where the adrenaline-fuelled wildebeest migration can be experienced through the various stages of its annual circular route. The Ngorongoro Crater is a collapsed volcano and its rich nutrients attract an abundance of Africa’s wildlife including elephants, lions, gazelle and the rare black rhino!
Namibia may not be your first thought when you think of African safari but it actually boasts one of Africa’s largest game parks, the Etosha National Park, home to the world’s largest population of wild cheetahs, and thriving populations of lion and leopard. So if it's big cats you want then Namibia awaits! With Namibia having a coastline there’s also an opportunity to see the seal colony at Cape Cross or watch hundreds of flamingos feed in the lagoon near Walvis Bay.
Last but not least, South Africa is known for its outstanding wildlife, particularly that which is found in the Kruger National Park which is one of the world's top safari destinations. It’s extremely likely that you will spot the Big 5 here, with plenty of options of accommodation from tented caps to spa lodges, all with incredible game drives. It’s the perfect safari destination if you’re combining cities including Cape Town or Johannesburg.
